FAQ: how does the database work?

Who can add information?

> This database is shared by different cultural operators who all help to make it exhaustive. But anybody can suggest information (which we will validate).

Is the information protected?

> Yes, all additions or modifications are checked by us, and will only appear only after validation. Moreover, the communal, non-ownership based nature of this database guarantees that your information will not be lost.

Why enter data?

> To make cultures of the South as visible as those of the North, it is important to build a tool that is as complete as possible. Any addition of cultural information contributes to this overall undertaking by making the database a reference for all. If you consider anything to be lacking, don't hesitate to remedy it; you will thus be contributing to the knowledge and dissemination of cultures of the South.

What's the difference between Southplanet and Wikipedia?

> Southplanet isn't an encyclopedia like Wikipedia; it's a professional showcase too. Its content isn't subjected to rules or controls, presentations can take different forms, the advanced search motor makes it possible to establish lists, and the existing and future professional visibility tools and networks go well beyond Wikipedia and serve artists of the South. However, the contents are subject to the same share licence as Wikipedia: free reproduction and referencing of the source.

What's the difference between Southplanet and Facebook?

> Although it serves as a directory of artists and their works and enables people to communicate via email, Southplanet is not a social network, whose information is ephemeral and very dense. The well-organized database offers precise and easily found information.

Can existing information be modified?

> Yes, in all instances, but any suggested modifications are carefully checked by us before validation. For cultural events, the file's creator can modify the file without validation. A person who is not the creator may suggest a modification, which we will again check and validate.

Why create an artist/professional file?

> In addition to the widespread visibility it provides (this database is the most developed in the world and has become an international reference), your file gives you access to a whole host of services:

  • Links with all your works and organizations, your participation in cultural events, dispatches about you and thus a complete presentation of your biography, your very own library!
  • A clear interface that will enable you to manage your information.
  • Links to your biography file via the newsletters and national cultural websites.
  • The possibility of developing a personal website for free based on information listed (these sites will soon offer a series of useful professional services).
  • Soon, the creation of a professional network enabling contacts and information sharing.

Why enter artistic works too?

> Linked to your biography file, each of your works can have their own presentation file, with an image gallery, video and audio links. Free website kits can also be used to promote your works.
